Cherryorchard2 is a blog set up by Martin Lyttle (a stone sculptor) to document the commissioning process for a “per cent for art scheme”. The scheme is Cherryorchard Housing Scheme, Phase II, in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. It is a social housing scheme built by Wexford Co. Council, on the east side of the town of Enniscorthy in Co. Wexford, Ireland.
As part of the development, a small percentage has been put aside to commission a piece of public art. This is administered by Wexford Co. Council Art Office, who invite submissions for a proposal from artists for the art work. An artist is selected by a selection panel in a two stage process to undertake his/her proposal at the site.
This blog follows the process for submission of the proposal, including developing an idea for a piece of sculpture, basic research, fleshing out, making maquettes, obtaining the stone, the carving process, installation etc.
Thanks to Wexford County Council Arts Office and in particular Sinead Redmond for all her help.
